RUSSIA MIAMI 2007 is inspired by the artists and gallerists who
have boldly and elegantly prepared the foundation for contemporary
art in Russia. I am very grateful to the artists who have agreed to participate
in this exhibition, some of whom are old friends, while others I
have met for the first time on this occasion: Aidan Salakhova,
Nikolay Bakharev, Dmitry Bulnygin, Piotr Denisyenko, Vladimir
Dubosarsky & Alexander Vinogradov, Georgy Gurianov, Dmitry
Gutov, Sergei Shekhovtsov (Porolon), Natasha Struchkova, Vasiliy
Tsagalov and Gennady Ustóugov. I was fortunate enough to have known
Timur Novikov, and I owe many thanks to Masha Novikova who so well
represents Timur’s work and his spirit. Vladimir Ovcharenko
introduced me to the work of Oleg Golosiy, and I thank him
for this enlightenment. Sergei Bugaev and Sergei Bratkov have been
active participants in the exhibition and I am always happy to
thank them for their friendship
and their ideas. The galleries have been impeccable in their representation of
the artists and I wish to thank Aidan Gallery, Moscow; D137
Gallery, St. Petersburg: Georgy Gurianov; Guelman Gallery, Moscow:
Gutov, Tsagalov; Regina Gallery: Bakharev, Bratkov, Golosiy,
Shekhovtsov, Struchkova, Dubosarsky & Vinogradov and XL
Gallery, Moscow: Aidan Salakhova. The process has been a pleasure
due to the invaluable help of the superb staff of the galleries,
the friendly, super efficient, multilingual and beautiful
gallerinas: Anna Gershberg, Olga Ippolitova, Anna Luneva, Kristina
Malykhina, Natasha Milovzorova, Nelly Podgorskaya and Daria
Soloviova. It has been a wonderful experience working on the catalogue with
Egor Larichev of World Art Museum, Moscow, and I thank him for his
expertise and good spirit.
My very special thanks go to the exhibition coordinators, Samantha
Kruse in Miami, for the careful preparation of the exhibition and
Nadezhda Proskuryakova, E.K. Art Bureau, Moscow, for the daunting
task of organizing the logistics necessary to bring Russian art to
Miami. The participation of Denis Simach¸v has enriched the exhibition
and I am thrilled that he has agreed to provide us with a unique
pattern for RUSSIA Miami 2007, the beautiful floral which graces
the pages of our catalogue, and new design and fashion. Thank you
Anna Dyulgerova, Ivan Makarov, and especially, Tatiana Stepanenko,
for your immediate enthusiasm. I would like to thank Nic Iljine for
inviting me to curate the exhibition. Nic is the initiator of the
concept of an exhibition of Russian contemporary art for Miami and
the master coordinator. I am delighted to thank Craig Robins of
Dacra, who has given us the Collins Building, Hjördis Kettenbach of
HUGO BOSS for their support and Sam Keller for his continued
interest. Most of all, thank you, Janna Bullock, for the gracious and
generous sponsorship of the RIGroup. And thank you, Victor Pelevin,
wherever you are… Thank you Aki Arjola
